Practical Local SEO Tips You Can Start Using Now
I believe in complete transparency when it comes to SEO. Below are the most effective ways to improve your local online presence, based on over a decade of hands-on experience. Many of these can be done yourself without hiring an SEO consultant.
Conventional Tips That Actually Work
- Consistent Business Information (NAP)
Ensure your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) are exactly the same across Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Yellow Pages, and your website. - Service-Specific Pages
Create a dedicated page on your website for each service you offer. Diverse and detailed content has a better chance of ranking on Google or being used by AI. For example, a page specifically about root canals for a local dentist will perform better than just mentioning root canals on a general page. More pages also create more internal links, which are a ranking signal. - Earn Quality Backlinks
Focus on earning links from local websites and reputable organizations (e.g., Dentists of America, local associations, local charities). - Report Spam on Google Maps
Flagging competitors who violate Google Business Profile guidelines is tedious but effective. - Get More (and Better) Reviews
Review quantity affects ranking slightly, but review quality and ratings heavily influence conversions. Ranking #1 with 3.8 stars won’t help if competitors have 4.7 stars.
Unconventional Tips That Also Work
- Use “Near Me” Strategically
Target “<service> near me” searches by including “near me” in your title tag and in one H1 or H2 heading on your homepage or location pages. Many SEO sites say this isn’t necessary because Google already knows your location – but in my experience (and my colleagues’), explicitly including it does help with rankings. - Use Main Keywords on Multiple Pages
Don’t stress about “keyword dilution.” I’ve never seen Google penalize websites for using their primary service + location keywords on multiple relevant page titles. The benefit is that you never know which page will end up ranking for a particular keyword – so using your main keywords on multiple pages increases your chances. - Create Unique, Local-Friendly Content
Add genuinely useful, locally relevant content – like Spanish versions of your pages in bilingual areas, recipe posts for bakeries, or insurance guides for medical offices. This type of content not only gives you more opportunities to rank, but also helps you cast a wider net and rank in a larger geographic area. That’s because competitors are less likely to cover these unique or niche topics, making it easier for your pages to stand out in surrounding cities or towns as well. - Add Relevant Reviews to Service Pages
Place customer reviews that mention specific services directly on those service pages. - Build Yelp Reviews Too
Google reviews matter most, but Yelp often ranks highly in local search results and influences customer decisions, so don’t ignore it.
SEO Tactics That Waste Time & Money
- Endless Blog Posts No One Reads
Agencies often push blogs because they’re easy to report as “deliverables.” But dozens of unread posts don’t build trust with Google. You can check this yourself – many top local businesses either don’t have blogs or have old blogs that aren’t updated frequently. - Spending on Google Ads Too Early
Ads are expensive and only effective if your business is already optimized to convert. Ironically, they’re least helpful for low-ranking businesses that need clients the most. Start with great SEO, a high-converting website, and strong reviews before investing heavily in ads. If you use an agency, choose one that charges per click, not per impression. - Low-Quality Backlinks
Links from private blog networks or link farms can hurt you in the long run. As the saying goes: “A fool throws a stone into a well, and seven wise men can’t retrieve it.” - Obsessing Over Page Speed Scores
Some of the largest websites – including Google’s own pages – score poorly on PageSpeed Insights. Page speed matters a little (e.g., avoid huge image files), but it’s a relatively minor ranking factor. - Keyword Stuffing / Over-Optimization
Forgetting an alt tag on your third image isn’t why you’re not ranking. If your main keywords are in your title tag (most important) and in a few headers (somewhat important), you’re already getting most of the benefit.
Common SEO Questions
Some questions about SEO come up more often than others. Here are the ones I hear most from business owners.
How long does it take to rank at the top?
You should see measurable progress within the first 1–2 months, with strong results typically appearing within 2–4 months.
The timeline depends on your current rankings and the level of competition. Highly competitive niches – or cases where you’re already close to the top – often take longer to see noticeable gains, since improvements require outperforming well-established competitors.
How much does SEO cost?
My monthly SEO service is $800. Across the industry, pricing typically ranges from $300 to $2,500+ per month, depending on quality and scope.
Prices vary so widely because SEO has a low barrier to entry, and many lower-cost agencies subcontract much of the work.
Because SEO is now a standard service, quality is more important than ever. Businesses that rank at the top typically rely on experienced, hands-on SEO consultants. To outperform them and overcome their momentum, you need an expert.
How are you different from other SEO consultants?
Most importantly, I have extensive experience ranking local sites at the top of Google (see results).
Unlike many SEO consultants, I bring a background as a conversion researcher and a former ecommerce manager. This means I don’t just help you rank—I help turn visitors into customers. You can read more about me and my approach.
Is SEO all you need to get customers?
In my experience, successful local businesses consistently have three things:
- Strong SEO
- A website designed to convert visitors into customers
- Positive, trustworthy reviews
When all three work together, businesses perform extremely well online.
Why do I need ongoing SEO work?
You might not need it; it depends on your niche.
In competitive markets, even after reaching the top, competitors are constantly publishing content and building links to outrank you.
This follows the principle of diminishing returns: the #4 position may be easier to maintain than #2, but it also receives significantly less traffic.
I hurt my site's rankings. What should I do?
The good news is that if the issue was caused by a specific mistake, it’s often much easier to fix than an unexplained Google penalty.
I’ve helped sites recover their rankings before, and the most important step is to address the problem quickly.
